FAQs
Where and when will my lessons be?
Lessons can be at your home and I carry an Enhanced DBS certificate for working with children. I can accommodate times and days that suit your schedule - evenings, weekends etc. (Please note, if you live outside of a 10 minute drive radius of Rossett, there may be a small travel surcharge on top of the lesson costs, or you can visit me in Rossett for your lesson).
I don’t own a guitar yet
If you haven’t bought a guitar yet, I have a selection available to loan while you decide if it’s for you. Sometimes I also have guitars and other kit for sale.
I have a guitar but it needs some work
If you have your own instrument but it needs a bit of work, just let me know as I can offer service and setup and advice to help you get it in good shape. Often, beginner instruments will suffer from going out of tune frequently or may have problems with strings buzzing or breaking. These are frustrating and will be a barrier to your enjoyment so it’s worth getting things sorted at the start. You can always loan a guitar from me while I get yours into shape!
Do I need to know music theory or how to read music?
No! I mean, if you have some basic theory it is definitely helpful but it is certainly not essential to learning and enjoying playing. Guitar music tends to be written in Tablature rather than traditional notation and this is very simple and intuitive to understand. As for theory, I can certainly teach you some of the basics as we go, but it’s up to you if you want this or not.
What is your full list of services?
Lessons for beginners and improvers - acoustic or electric, whatever you have or want to work on
Purchasing guidance - don’t throw money at gear without getting advice
Set-up / Service of existing instruments - most instruments will benefit from a good set-up
Restringing and tuning your own guitar
Reading guitar tablature - it’s easy, don’t worry!
Use of capo, tremelo arm, effects processors, recording software etc.,
Do you offer group sessions for schools?
Yes! I carry an enhanced DBS certificate as I have worked in education for many years. School or group sessions can certainly be booked in on a regular basic. These will not be working towards grades but would be perfect for general improvements for individuals or as an after-school club etc.. Get in touch for group costs.
Ok, how much will it cost?
All lessons are £20 / hour and include a workbook, homework, training exercises and suggested listening.
Typically, lessons will be fortnightly so that you have time to practice. If you feel as if you need more, that’s possible but it should never feel like a chore - in fact, I would rather you took a break from playing than tried to force it. Sometimes, after taking a step back, you come back to it with renewed enthusiasm. I can also do adhoc lessons, there’s no need to commit to regular sessions if that doesn’t work for you.
Once you become confident and competent, you will need fewer sessions or possibly even none at all as you will be armed with the techniques, skills and knowledge required to develop things yourself.
